#DurbanBigwalk 2017

It is exactly one week since the Discovery and East Coast Radio (ECR) big walk.

The big walk is an annual event that takes place in Durban along side the promenade.  Tens of Thousands of people gather and walk / run all in the name of being healthy and having some fun whilst at it.

It’s a social/health inspired event that quickly gained its popularity over the years.

My family and I, amongst many other families, were up at the crack of dawn, setting up refresher stations for the walkers/runners. Yes, we volunteered. And it was amazing.

The theme for the year was “we are solemates”. Seeing a city flock out in numbers and walk/ run side by side irrespective of age, colour or creed was one of the highlights for me. I’ve attended the past 3 annual events however, this year I was amazed at the number of kids that took part in the event. It really was such a beautiful thing to see.

What was even more amazing was that I got to meet one of my all time favourite radio personalities. THEE Jane Linley.

She is just as amazing in person as she is on radio.

Our refresher station saw every person that took part in the race/walk and boy oh boy was it a sight to see and a thing to feel.

We saw people laugh and literally cry but what we didn’t see what people give up! We cheered them on and they did it!

We came. We laughed. We danced (at certain refresher stations, ECR radio personalities were there to encourage and cheer on the walkers/ runners). We hydrated. We felt. We ate. We were present and it felt oh-so-goooood.

You’re welcome to click Durban big walk for more information on the event.

#QOTD #26

What a trying week; preparations for Ramadan, work, work and more work and then having the flu barging in and unannounced. Yeah, yeah (: I know, it could be loads worse!

So listen. Today’s quote was one that reminded me of a sentiment I hold quite dear. I firmly believe that in order to be empowered, you need to empower. Almost like the “be the change you want to see” kind of vibe.

Through every interaction, this is what I strive to do. Believe me when I say, that I don’t always get it right because human nature can sometimes spark the judgemental side I’ve been trying to put to rest lol. But nevertheless, I mostly get it right. (I think🙈)

One of my all time favourite poets/ author once said:

If you get, give. If you learn, teach.

You guessed it (:

~ THE Maya Angelou.

Such a simple concept that is widely underestimated! And I simply love it.

I mean, what could you possibly lose by giving what you got or teaching what you’ve learnt?

…Scared someone else may get that job or that they may know or be liked more than you? I suppose I can understand however, when you know that God has a special plan just for you, you kinda just chill hey!

You know that no matter what anybody tries to do or say or that what anybody doesn’t do or say, it will come to you if it’s meant for you. That should be enough for us. Knowing that God has a plan.

So I say: Don’t be selfish! Give what you got and share your knowledge even it’s just for the sake of being a force for social good. Be the person that people know they go to when in need because they confidently trust that if you can, you will help. I’m striving to be that person; the one who gives unconditionally and not only when it suites them.

Instead of throwing shade, talking down upon or about others and just being negative, let’s invest that energy in empowering, giving, teaching and sharing 🙂 I mean, Barney ( yes, the purple dinosaur) did say “sharing is caring” right 😃

I don’t call it #thoughtfulthursday for nothing.

May peace and blessings be upon each of you always and may we continue to spread love and light.

Gratitude

It has been one of the toughest weeks of 2017 by far.

Staying afloat and remaining positive has never taken so much out of me. I am however, a firm believer that we all need to have some bad days to sincerely appreciate the good ones 🙂

I am training myself to see the light even when I’m stuck in the middle of what seems to be a never-ending storm. As a result, there are some things that moved me this past week that I really just need to put out there and extend some gratitude for.

Many of you know that I lost my son. Each year, I am overwhelmed by the mothers day messages I receive. The kind words and reassurance that my little soldier is watching over me, always warms my heart. To each and every one of you who took the time out to send me those beautiful messages, I say Thank You and this is from the depths of my heart.

The one wish received however, really touched my heart and will forever remain embedded in my minds’ box of sentimental memories. The wish from my mentee. Many of you would also know that I mentor a beautiful 13 year old little girl at one of the kiddies homes here in Durban. This is done through an absolutely wonderful programme; The Bright Star mentorship programme. This is one of the very many programmes run by the Peace agency.

You guys should really check the programme out, you can do so by clicking here. You can also check out information on the Peace Agency and other projects linked to them by clicking here. You guys are welcome to comment or message me for more information as well 🙂

I am currently in my second year of mentoring through this programme and you would have seen through  my previous posts just how amazing my mentee is. She made me the most beautiful card with the most heart warming words. God really has a constant way of showing me just how much he loves me. I really feel so privileged being apart of this little one’s life. With each weekly visit, I am constantly fulfilled. #Forevergrateful

I also need to extend my gratitude to my friends, family and significant other. Knowing just how trying this week has been, these guys are always at my side reminding me to keep going, reminding me of God, reminding me that I have been through worse. These guys are always encouraging me and boy oh boy, they never allow me to wallow. I promise you, if it was not for them, I don’t even want to think of the position I would be in and I mean really, what more could a girl possibly ask for? #Mysupportstructureisbetterthanyours

Lastly, my creator. You know how we sometimes have those silent prayers that our hearts whisper but we brush off? yeah those. God always seems to listen and let me know in his own way that he has heard. Me being able to write this post is really only by his will and permission and therefore I have to honor him. #blessedbeyondmeasure

so God, thank you for everything, thank you for my heavenly angel that is there with you, thank you for my mentee and allowing be to be apart of such a phenomenal mentorship programme, thank you for my family, friends and my special person and thank you for never giving up on me. People often ask me how do I remain so grounded and my answer was, is and  will always be: my faith and my God.

So with that done, I will encourage you to give thanks and to purposely remind yourself of all the good things you got going in your life, especially when you have 101 things to complain about. It has worked for me, I am sure it will for you too.

Love and light always,

We are blessed

They say that the most valuable gift you can give somebody is your time and I concur!
Saturday Amy and I spent the day with work colleagues at the Durban child and youth care center. What an amazing and humbling experience! Thanks to our employer : Discovery Health, for being such a great force for social good!

We tend to take so many things for granted and this became apparent to me when I was calling the kids to receive their gifts…I don’t know if it was their  excitement and impatient tendacy of ripping apart the wrapping, their eyes that widend and brightened up or their yells “aunty come see what I got (aunty? I know right, felt so old😭) that warmed by heart.

It became even more apparent to me when we actually sat down and spoke with some of the older kids and listened to their life stories and also when we played, danced with and loved the littler ones… these kids literally have the “survivor of the toughest” outlook on life at such a young age.

…And then I wondered to myself: who gives us the right to complain about steak that’s not cooked properly? Or water that’s not room temperature. lol, and these kids are grateful for just the morning you sacrificed to be with them. We need to catch a wake up!

The one thing that intrigued me was that even with their struggles, they laughed and loved whole heartedly and sincerely and were so grateful and content.

I once again got my reality check. I once again looked at my life and realized how blessed I am and how grateful I should be for the things and people and connections that I have in life.

If I can change the situation for Atleast one of these kids, I will be fulfilled! 2016 has been great because it is the year that I started making an effort to give back but 2017 is the year that I will make a more conscious effort to giving back to the community especially the kids; through my time.

I have just 10 days left to visit Miks grave, with mixed emotions, this has just made me realize that even his loss was in fact a blessing in disguise… if I had him, I might not have had the time to make a difference in the lives of these kids .

Love and well wishes always
