South Africa’s most romantic cities

Deciding what to do for an anniversary? Looking for a romantic getaway to propose or contemplating a well-deserved “time-out” surprise with your significant other?

Do not despair! We are going to feature some of South Africa’s most romantic cities. There are amazing cities you can visit with tons of activity to bring you and yours closer.

We kick off this feature with my home town:

Durban

image1.jpeg

Known for its subtropical climate and extensive beaches; it makes for a romantic hub of note.

You will have an array of activities to keep you and yours occupied.

You can enjoy long walks on the promenade or romantic picnics at the infamous Botanic or Japanese gardens. Feel for an intimate brekkie date? You can visit one of our many unique and quaint cafés. One of my favourite joints to visit is the Antique Café’… you will not be sorry.

If you want to add a little extra sparkle to ignite tons of memories, you can enjoy a variety of Zulumoon gondola rides or sunset cruises in and around the Durban harbor.

We also have activities for the adventurers! You can experience swinging from the world’s tallest swing at the Moses Mabhida Stadium or you and yours could go cage diving with the Sharks down the KZN south coast.

You’ll be a guaranteed to enjoy a variety of cuisines including our most popular; Indian, infused with the freshest of spices to tantalise those taste buds.

Next up, we feature the city of Gold:

Johannesburg

image1 (1).jpeg

Johannesburg (Egoli) is the largest city in South Africa. Known for its historical opulence and modern flare, you can enjoy site-seeing and museum hopping in the streets of Soweto. For some grown-up fun, you and yours can play dress-up, wish upon a jackpot star and then whisk off to the Monte Casino to black jack or spin-a-wheel.

My personal favorite thing to do, because it brings out my inner-child, is to visit the Gold Reef City theme park. A reasonable entry fee allows you all-day access to some of the most exhilarating rides. If you’re like me and reside outside of Egoli, cheap flights to Johannesburg is a thing, so do not despair. Fun and memories will be guaranteed.

Last but definitely not least, the mother city:

Cape Town: The home of my heritage.

image1 (2).jpeg

Cape Town is like that humble, cool kid in school, you want to despise it, yet you can’t help but love it at the same time.

Known for its colourful demeanor, multi-culture, unique mountains and breath-taking scenery, it really is no wonder why it has gained popularity on the international and national tourism streets.

The city’s natural settings and good climate will guarantee breathtaking selfies. Walk the streets of the colourful Bo-Kaap and take in the malay culture and beautiful scenery or, hitch a cable car ride to the top of table mountain that will award you an overlooking view of the entire city. See what I mean about breath-taking selfies being guaranteed?!

If mini road trips are your thing, you can drive along Chapman’s peak and stop at Hout Bay, one of my personal favourites. You can book a Robben Island Tour or even plan a visit to the Cape point vineyard.

Still not sold?  Perhaps the fact that Cape Town is the seafood hub of South Africa and is home to the infamous Charly’s Bakery, may change your mind. It certainly adds brownie points to my list.

South Africa is a diverse, multi-cultured place and has so much to offer. These really are just some of my personal, memorable activities that you and yours can experience but assured, there is so much more that you can do. Most cities have tour, Double-Decker buses that you can hop on, to see some of the most popular tourist attractions in each city, so you’re welcome to inquire about those.

Affordable flights, the person you love and a country filled with romantic cities…what are you waiting for?

#DurbanBigwalk 2017

It is exactly one week since the Discovery and East Coast Radio (ECR) big walk.

The big walk is an annual event that takes place in Durban along side the promenade.  Tens of Thousands of people gather and walk / run all in the name of being healthy and having some fun whilst at it.

It’s a social/health inspired event that quickly gained its popularity over the years.

Birds eye view of the event. Photo cred📸: ECR
My family and I, amongst many other families, were up at the crack of dawn, setting up refresher stations for the walkers/runners. Yes, we volunteered. And it was amazing.

The theme for the year was “we are solemates”. Seeing a city flock out in numbers and walk/ run side by side irrespective of age, colour or creed was one of the highlights for me. I’ve attended the past 3 annual events however, this year I was amazed at the number of kids that took part in the event. It really was such a beautiful thing to see.

What was even more amazing was that I got to meet one of my all time favourite radio personalities. THEE Jane Linley.

She is just as amazing in person as she is on radio.

Our refresher station saw every person that took part in the race/walk and boy oh boy was it a sight to see and a thing to feel.

We saw people laugh and literally cry but what we didn’t see what people give up! We cheered them on and they did it!

We came. We laughed. We danced (at certain refresher stations, ECR radio personalities were there to encourage and cheer on the walkers/ runners). We hydrated. We felt. We ate. We were present and it felt oh-so-goooood.

You’re welcome to click Durban big walk for more information on the event.

Coloureds: A cursed nation?

I sit and write this with a heavy heart. For the 1st time in a very long time im at the brink of hopelessness. Not feeling too proud of being coloured and thats purely ‘coz of the injustices that are constantly forced upon us.

In the apartheid regime, we werent white enough and today, we arent black enough. Its almost as if we are blamed for the previous white leaders having affairs with their domestics. How evil! How unjust. How cruel.

Coloured youngsters are RIPing every single week and are being killed by our very own, sometimes from the very next road and brutally might I add. Families cant grieve or mourn in peace because we now live in fear of the opposition gangs petrol bombing or starting a shooting frenzy. Religious buildings under attack. Its ludacrous.

#CapeFlats#PE#WentworthKZN

We’ve now started fighting each other for terrortory. For a “name” ‘coz thats all we have left to fight for.

BEE only gives us a mere 8.8% in the employment sector. And all community upliftments are done in “other” areas and we kinda get the “left overs” or the “lets just do it to say we did it”. Has the pity made things worse?

How do we change this? How do we rewire ALL these years of injustices that have forced our youngsters to settle as drug lords, that have forced them to join gangs just to be protected. Just to be able to put a plate of food on the table? Can these questions be answered?

Im no expert. So I dont even know if its possible. What I do know is that we can rewire our own mentality. Coloured women, liberate yourselves and conform not to what society labels us as; the village bicycle who has no ambition. The raw, uncooth chick who is bound to have 5 kids from different men at the age of 15.

Coloured women, lets be grateful for the oppotunities God has blessed us with and lets start making an effort to include Him more in our lives. Lets start tolerating each other. Being patient. Being more supportive to ourselves, family, friends and community. Lets start practicing kindness and love. We are the leaders of the nation and once we ge this right, our kids and future kids will have this mentality. We are their first teachers. You are unique and you are beautifully courageous my coloured sister.

Coloured men, do right by your women, lead you and your family to the path of God. So,”they” give you the less glamourous jobs that make it difficult to provide for your family? Instead of asking “why me?” Lets start asking “why not me?” God really gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers.

Lets change the perception of coloured men in our communities; the label that suggests our men are violent and are only good to drink and jol. The label that says our men are useless. You are loved. You are strong and I Salute you my coloured brother.

image

We can do this by just working on ourselves and our mindsets. Time is running out. We are living in a war zone and the devil is at work. He’s probably rejoicing at the progress he’s made ‘coz we are conforming to what he wants us to conform to; heartless folk only after drugs, money and fame with no humanity or God left in us.

The battle isnt over. We have to level out these playing fields and it starts with you and I. Today!

May all the souls lost through these gang wars RIP. And may strength and comfort be bestowed amongst their families.

Our challenge

WE ARE NOT A CURSED NATION. Share your thoughts or words of encouragement below and please share so we can get this to as many folk as we possibly can.
