Ladies only: My journey with abnormal uterine bleeding

It’s been a while since I’ve last blogged here. Being in a very confusing and overwhelming state and my health taking a knock, I honestly haven’t had much gumption for anything besides sleep.

Many of you who know me, know that for the past two years, I’ve been battling abnormal uterine bleeding. This post is me documenting my journey with this in hope to offer support to others who are battling the same thing and to get support, tips and tricks from others as well. So here it goes.

My journey!

In 2018, I was admitted twice, by two different gynae’s for abnormal uterine bleeding and discharged without an actual diagnosis. I was treated for the bleeding and it was stopped, all scans and tests came back normal and I was told stress and a bad diet can lead to hormonal imbalances, which is the secondary cause of most cases of uterine bleeding. I instructed to lose some weight and all will be fine and was put on the pill (Marvelon) for a few months and was told all should be sorted. I will admit, my weight has been up and down and I haven’t spent much time focusing on losing weight. It might be an excuse but might I add, the previous Gynae didn’t pin it down to weight loss because he said he’d treated and delivered babies for patients heavier than me.

For a couple of months after that I was fine. Period was regular and hey, the cloud over my head was disappearing…but not for long. Soon after, 1 period lead from one week, to one month to three. The bleeding would then suddenly stop. Then I’d go months without bleeding or getting a period and then the cycle would start all over again.

This has been going on for about two years. I know there are many women who can relate. It’s amazing when you reach out and only then do you hear and come to know of so many women going through this. It isn’t easy to deal with this. Physically, mentally and psychologically. It is draining. We will keep that post ( the emotional roller coaster for another post).

To date I’ve been bleeding heavily for months. About a month ago I visited my GP who gave me medication to stop the bleeding and started me on the pill again (Marvelon). For the first week, the bleeding had stopped, goodness was I relieved but then Aunty Susie and her cousins had withdrawal symptoms and just needed to visit again. Yeap, the bleeding started again, even whilst being on the pill. Just this time is was coupled with the most severe cramps I have ever experienced. If I could compare it, it would def fit the description of a contraction. The heaviness of the pelvic area, the wave of excruciating pain and a sharper pain over the left ovary and my lower back region. This got me really worried.

With all things COVID and the financial burdens it has added on many of our shoulders, seeing a gynae was going to to harden the blow. Nothing less than R1000 for a consult plus whatever meds they were going to prescribe, which I was certain would include something to stop the bleeding, very expensive pills, and another batch of contraceptives, iron supplements and who knows what else.

I decided to research homeopathy instead. Honestly, I’ve never been a fan of feeding my body something synthetic to do what it is naturally supposed to do. So I was never a fan of any form of contraceptive. I’ve always gravitated to all things natural, from oil mixtures for my hair, to making home treatments for my face, the flu, green juices etc. I figured I have nothing to lose by just trying a more natural approach since the more conventional medicine routine didn’t help much.

I googled and found Dr Farzana Hansa based in Musgrave Durban and decided to visit. I was so impressed by her, she just had a wonderful aura and energy. I felt so calm around her. She was really concerned by how long I’d been bleeding for and made a concerted effort to create a time line for me, from family history of illnesses, to my illnesses, to physical concerns from head to toe, to emotional and mental check ins. As a side note I have been under an immense amount of stress from both my work and personal life. To the point where I find it difficult to just cope and manage. I feel so overwhelmed and to still be battling health issues…it becomes much even for strong people like myself. I had divulged all of this to her, including the loss of Mikail, the step admissions I mentioned earlier and all of my chronic illness etc. she even asked for medication intake frequently.

She started me on a regime to try to balance out the hormones and to manage the anxiety and stress. She prescribed 30 drops Ashwaghanda and Rhodliola drops with 30 drops of chasteberry drops in a 1/4 glass of water morning and evening. 5 drops of vitamin D drops every morning under the tongue and my very first homeopathic treatment called calc carb, to help with and manage the stress and moods and that’s 5 drops under the tongue every evening. All this with a probiotic, omega 3 and iron supplement.

My natural medicine regimen

She made me feel hopeful again as she said that there are lots of natural remedies to try but started off with this to see if it works. I am day 4 into the regime and have a check in with her next Friday. Let’s cross fingers and hope the bleeding calms. I have noticed a better quality of my sleep from day 2 but to date, the bleeding is still very heavy. The cramps however, are not as frequent and not as intense. For the four bottles of treatment ( Ashwagandha, Chasteberry, Vit D and the Calc Carb, I already had the other stuff, so she suggested to finish that off) with the consult, my bill was R1 045.00. Compared to what I would’ve paid had I visited a gynae. I was chuffed.

This is where I am at on my journey. I had an idea to try and document each milestone or encounter and really hope this may some how offer support to anyone else going through this. I know how lonely it gets going through this. Just know you are not alone and any other woman reading this, if you know if someone battling this, please make a concerted effort to check in with her every now and then, send anything like a positive message or upbeat song, to uplift a mood. Most often than not, just those small things helps us get through the day on some of our worst days.

Corona virus : Are you prepared?

First post for the new year and it is on this note. But let’s make the most of it shall we?

Amidst the outbreak of the horrid Corona Virus, news agencies have been reporting daily about how this vicious virus is claiming so many lives and how rapidly it is infecting people. The point of the post is to spread awareness. So please read until the end and share it with someone you know.

I have a sister and two nieces who are abroad. They are based In Hubei, Wuhan; the city mostly affected by this virus. The city is on lock down. Nobody can enter or leave. You need a permit to drive In public. The city is literally quarantined. People are dying; falling whilst waiting to get seen to. Hospitals are packed to capacity. Healthcare workers, no no rather heros, are working around the clock to ensure they cure and see to as many people as they can. I feel like I’m writing a script to a movie.

No doubt that their safety is my biggest concern. But further to that, it is our safety. If Shanghai has declared a level 1 emergency on this (the highest level), why aren’t we seeing preventative posts here In South Africa? I mean people are constantly traveling to and from China. It kinda is no wonder though, when our government doesn’t even care much about its citizens abroad.

Latest stats

What’s even more alarming is that every other continent has recorded cases of infected people except us here in Africa… One case was earlier brought to light but no confirmation on whether it was the virus or not. Are there really no records or is something being hushed? I suppose that’s a conversation for another day. But something just doesn’t add up.

The point of this post though is to spread awareness though, so let’s get back to topic.

Keep your immune systems strong. You can do that by staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, eating more fresh fruits and veggies. You can take vitamin c supplements and other multi vitamins. Excersise often and just stay healthy.

Another important part of this is hygiene. Sanatize all your belongings atleast twice a day. Use alcohol based hand Sanatizer. Keep it with you. If you go to gym, wipe those machines down and sanatize before and after. If you don’t have Sanatizer, you mix a cap of detol to 400mls of water and spray it over your belongings. Or even use ammonia based products such as bleach and or Domestos.

Spread this as it could help save someone’s life.

The Corona virus is said to be 10 times worse than the SARS virus and scientists estimate that it will only start dying down In May. May God keep all those abroad safe and keep their families here at home calm. Aameen

#QOTD #74: Faith

The first of March. Dude! Where is 2018 going!!!

Bittersweet month for me; passing of my son and loads of family birthdays, including mine.

I figured the below quote is fitting, because it kept me sane and put a lot into perspective when Mika’il passed on. Five. He would have been five this year! And I’m getting stronger as the years go by, whenever I have my moments, I remind myself of this quote. Prophet Muhammad (may peace and blessings be upon him) said:

The reality of faith is knowing that what has passed you by was not going to befall you; and that what has befallen you was not going to pass you by

That’s right! What’s meant for you, has your name on it.

I can go on and blame the hospital nurses on technicality. I could blame my situation, ex husband and even myself. But the truth is, God willed it this way and he knows why.

Perhaps he knew deep down inside, the mother I wished to be and the condition I wanted to raise my kids in and he knew Mika’il wouldn’t have had that.

Perhaps Mika’il was meant to change me and grant me strength to get rid of all the toxic; people and situations I had in my life… this reasons are actually endless (:

So whether you’re applying for a new post, taking on a new venture or preparing to achieve your goal. Do your best and put in the work but should it not materialize as expected, don’t beat yourself up because, if it is meant for you, it will never pass you (:

We spend too much time over thinking with what-ifs , should haves, could haves or would haves.

Your best is enough!

Don’t be a hard rock when you really are a 💎.

Yes, you got it, the legendary Lauryn Hill, in her Doo Wop track.

I’m always drawn to this phrase or statement or lyric (whatever you wanna call it) lol.

It is so simple yet so profound.

Often we complicate things way too much. We forget ourselves in situations and in most cases, those same situations need us to apply our truest selves. We just settle and forget our worth.

We feel that we need to conform, more dominant amongst the ladies. We think we need to look, think, act in a certain way to be noticed, or wear, breathe, eat and drink specifics in order to fit in.

We become numb and cold to all the hate and negativity because that’s easier than just dealing.

… And then comes Lauryn with this powerful reminder.

My take on those lyrics is that we don’t NEED to DO anything, but be who we are. It is enough.

I say, wear that “pass-me-down” dress that your gran made so many moons ago for your Mum and so what if it’s paired with a pair of no names from pick n pay or Mr price?

Be open to critism to better yourself and for no other reason. Learn to accept and respect who you are, in your truest form so that others will learn to respect and accept you as you are.

Own yourself because There is none like you in this world and never just settle.

Kings and queens, don’t forget your worth!

It really is okay to be the bow

Be who you were created to be, not who they think you should be.

~ TayBreezy

I was reminded yesterday morning, just how short life is, how, in a blink of an eye, you can take your last breath. I was reminded that there are no guarantees in life and in that we should always remain true to God, ourselves and then everyone and everything else.

This quote was inspired just by this:

It can become very easy to lose ourselves when fitting in is a thing we need to do or after a traumatic experience. We lose sight of who we really are because we allow the thoughts and feelings of others to consume us to a point where we become just like them.

Far too many times I see this and it always leaves an unsettling feeling within. I think I may have even fell victim to this at one point of my life; trying to fit in, please and gain likes.

I see people that would literally do anything, just to be validated and in many cases, by irrelevant people. Then, alas, they lose themselves to what people think they should be, act the way people say they should act and even think the way people programme them to think.

And then I ask myself Why? ‘Coz You’re beautiful as you are. You’re worthy as you are!

When you know something is wrong, you have an obligation to attempt to put it right.

If you see the world through your own eyes, you have nothing to be ashamed of.

If you like blue and all girls supposed to like pink, heck, own the damn blue lol.

Standing out by being yourself may ruffle a few feathers, it may cause people to dislike you but hey, ever heard the saying “those who matter don’t mind and those who mind don’t matter”? …

And I know It can be real hard sometimes, especially if you’re surrounded by the mediocre type who don’t know who they really are and resort to doing all sorts of things just to be validated.

But I say, always remind yourself of your purpose and your obligation to God first and if it’s all good between you and him, then you know you’re good.

Let the life you live be an example for those who follow you. No leader in history made it to the history books by being people they’re not, liked by everybody or silenced just for peace sake.

As our ever talented Kendrick would say: we got royalty, got loyalty inside our DNA!

So Sprinkle that YOUnique dust and don’t let anybody, dull that sparkle.

Love and light ya’ll

We’ve been quiet with these for the longest of time. I had a thought this morning and when explored, it made so much of sense. A #wisewednesday indeed!

If happiness is a state of mind. We can safely say that you cant find it (happiness or a state of mind) but can rather create it. Stop trying to find your happiness and start creating it

~ TayBreezy

Makes sense doesn’t it? Far too often I’ve found myself and others saying “I’m finding my happiness” but when you actually sit down and think about what happiness actually is, it’s impossible to find. It’s not a thing you pick off from a super market shelf or that you can find hanging on a wrack, neither is it something that you unwrap from a box or can buy.

Happiness is all you.

With that said, I hope you all have an amazing day. Start working on creating your own happiness. You have the power.

Student 101: Essentials of planning

Failing to plan is planning to fail

~ unknown

So after the eventful weekend and a Monday off, it was back to the grind; the chaos, the admin… you know how it goes.

I also received my study material from the University of South Africa (UNISA). I was so eager to go through everything that as soon as I got home and prepared supper, I dived right into it…

And then I got so overwhelmed sigh!

I had to remind self that we’ve been here before and others have too, and they’ve been ok, so we’ll be ok. Self calmed down and then I decided to start working constructively.

One thing I’ve taken away from the corporate world that brilliantly applies to managing ones studying, is planning. I honestly am guilty of taking this for granted and not giving it the importance it deserves.

Once you learn to plan, you plan to succeed. You are aware of deadlines, you’re more organized, you are able to manage your time to ensure that whatever needs to be done, gets done.

And so I decided to start with reading through my tutorial letters, marking the assignment pages for each module with little sticky notes and then plotted it on a year planner (UNISA sent me one, you can make one if you don’t have an already printed one)

I colour coded mine to make it easier to identify what’s due when at first glance and well to make it more colourful (: I then pinned it up on my wardrobe.

I have a key ( as you can see right on top) indicating which colour represents which module. All entries marked with “1” are placed on their respective due dates. These are one of two assignments for each module this semester. All entries marked with 2, are placed on their respective due dates and these are the second assignments due for each module in this semester.

Finally, all entries marked “exams” are placed on the days that I’m set to write and the times.

You can plot this on your phone if you’re more tech savvy, jot it in your diary, schedule emails to yourself or set reminders if you will…. just plan (:

If you would like to adopt a similar method to mine, here’s the things that you would need:

  • Year planner
  • Sticky notes ( various colours to colour code the various modules)
  • Pair of scissors
  • Sellotape
  • Pen
  • Your study material

You could even plot your assignments and exam dates by writing with different colour pens if you wish. It really is up to you.

Today’s quote is therefore dedicated to the essentials and importance of planning. This may apply to any project, your job or simple goals or simple things that you’d like to do around the house. #justplan

Hope this helps Xx
