Hirsch’s head chef competition 2017

It’s just before 4pm on Friday afternoon and I can get a call from my dad asking if I heard the good news. The only news I was waiting for, was the outcome of a competition that my baby brother was partaking in.

Many of you who know me and my baby bro, know that we are a love-hate relationship personified!

But they also know that I’m THE biggest cheer leader for anybody, when it comes to celebrating accomplishments, especially those of brothers and sister.

Last week Friday, 27 October 2017, Hirsch’s hosted the first head chef of the year competition.

The competition was meant to take place earlier in the year, at the East Coast Radio house and garden show however, due to technicalities, the competition was postponed.

Top culinary schools selected their top students to battle it off for the title.

My brother was selected from his college together with his colleague Havinsha and was up against some worthy opponents from other culinary schools in Durban.

A tough-to-please panel of judges were ready and waiting to critique their dishes. The judging panel comprised Allan Hirsch, Joani Mitchell and Desmond Davies.

We’ve always encouraged my brother to be humble and to have fun in all he does, that’s ultimately what it’s about and time after time he takes our advice and makes us proud.

Yes. He took the title of Hirsch’s head chef of the year for 2017.

This is such a huge achievement for him and for our family, considering that prior to him becoming a chef, he lacked drive and passion.

As his older sister I felt obliged to write this piece dedicated to him. To introduce him to the world because he’s slowly earning his place. This kid is darn good at what he does.

To Fish, boytjie, all I can say is keep doing you. Stay true to who you are. Remain humble and give off your best at all times whilst having the time of your life. Each dish you put out is a true reflection of you. Remember: there will always be somebody more skilled than you, less talented than you but there will never be anybody that is just like you.

Super proud of you. This industry isn’t ready for you Boy but you show them!

Proud moment: Chef Fish spoiling his folks

Love and light from an extremely proud older sissy.

Dear future husband,

It’s exam time and again, I’m on the no carb no sugar run (yeah yeah it’s about the third time- no judgement) AND Aunty Suzzie is over for the week, so please bare with me.

My levels of cranky are gonna be escalated. Please take any random outbursts with a pinch of salt and don’t take it personal but take it personal, I know you understand what I mean 😊

Thanking you in advance for your patience.

Don’t be a hard rock when you really are a 💎.

Yes, you got it, the legendary Lauryn Hill, in her Doo Wop track.

I’m always drawn to this phrase or statement or lyric (whatever you wanna call it) lol.

It is so simple yet so profound.

Often we complicate things way too much. We forget ourselves in situations and in most cases, those same situations need us to apply our truest selves. We just settle and forget our worth.

We feel that we need to conform, more dominant amongst the ladies. We think we need to look, think, act in a certain way to be noticed, or wear, breathe, eat and drink specifics in order to fit in.

We become numb and cold to all the hate and negativity because that’s easier than just dealing.

… And then comes Lauryn with this powerful reminder.

My take on those lyrics is that we don’t NEED to DO anything, but be who we are. It is enough.

I say, wear that “pass-me-down” dress that your gran made so many moons ago for your Mum and so what if it’s paired with a pair of no names from pick n pay or Mr price?

Be open to critism to better yourself and for no other reason. Learn to accept and respect who you are, in your truest form so that others will learn to respect and accept you as you are.

Own yourself because There is none like you in this world and never just settle.

Kings and queens, don’t forget your worth!

It really is okay to be the bow

Love and light always, from just an ordinary girl

Dear future husband

You need to be prepared to partake in random car pool karaoke sessions. Or “staged” concerts at our home, in our pjs and singing into a hair brush or broom or anything that resembles a mic.

You need to be the lights, camera and action when we have our cleaning jam sessions. Yes, we will be that couple.

If you’re not gonna join, you must at the very least, be an involved audience. Clap, scream , cheer me on and act like my number 1 groupie. I need to feel the positive energy flowing into my bones.

If you can do this, we will be good to go.

Hands down I will be your number one cheerleader in whatever it is that you do.

How do you know if you winning?

For me, it’s not based on the house you live in, the car you own or the balance of your bank account.

For me? Winning is the piece of me that I consciously leave behind with every interaction and that piece actually being received. Winning for me is the opposite of perfection, it’s being strong enough to wear your flaws like a diamond necklace and still have people accept you as you are.

Winning for me is theperception of me that lies with God, my family and friends. It’s my circle.

This post was inspired by a challenge I accepted. It was a #complimentchallenge going around on FB where, your friends would leave their name and you would need to mention one thing you love about them.

Ofcause I couldn’t just mention ONE thing, I mean what torture is that!

I gravitated towards the challenge because celebrating the best in people is what I do and also because my connection with each person I encounter is personal. I latch on to the things in them that we share and that’s how our interactions are always valuable. The things we don’t share widens my perspective so it’s an all round blissful interaction.
It took a turn because whilst I was having fun having mention the thins I love and admire about my friends, their responses literally made my heart melt.

And this ❤️

For a second I thought I was on the wrong thread.🙈 so humbled you guys.

I love each of you dearly and really appreciate the love and support and encouragement you guys have given me so far on this journey of self mastery I’ve embarked on.

Whilst the haters will always hate, how can I not be winning with friends and family like these 🙌🏼

Check yourself. That’s how you know you’re winning (: it’s all about true connections.

❤️ and 🌈 always. From just an ordinary , appreciative girl

Dear future husband

I wanna be able to suggest things like:

“Let’s go outside and watch the stars” or “let’s go play in the rain”  or “let’s plant a garden” or even “let’s have a movie marathon”.

I wanna be able to suggest them confidently knowing that you wouldn’t automatically shut them down. I wanna know that you’d be down to do such things and that you’d only say no if you’re unwell or really have something important (life and death) to do.

I also want you to be comfy asking me to do random stuff, like teach me how to change a tyre or paint or even fix taps.

I’m praying for you and know that I’m praying to be the wife that you deserve.

Chris Brown’s: welcome to my life doccy 👌🏼✌🏼💯

Listen, if you know me, you know I am #teambreezy lol.

Besides the fact that I gravitate towards his creativity; sing, dance, sport, graffiti and style, I respect his hustle.

Today Chris Brown’s documentary: Welcome to my life airs on Netflix

Best believe I had a count down and as soon as I opened my eyes, after I said my morning prayer and before I brushed my teeth, my laptop was out.

I’ve just closed my laptop, done watching and this is what I’ve taken from this doccy (as unbiased as I can be) :

  1. We are all flawed
  2. You will be judged
  3. Take accountability
  4. Use your step back to fuel your come back
  5. Perseverance is key
  6. Push your passion
  7. Own yourself, flaws and all
  8. There will always be Haters
  9. Family is everything
  10. God first, all else second

To come back from what he came back from, to err in public , be judged by the world and fight all the emotional issues he fought…. #legend #Own your Sh**!

I consider him brave, to open up himself to the world, highlight his flaws and challenges on a public stage…  and still be able to push on#respect

Call him a women beater, a devil , spoilt or entitled… and all I’m gonna say is look in the mirror.

You may not like him, but you will respect his hustle lol!
Having gone through my own kind of trauma, I aspire to make a legendary comeback as he has. I aspire to show the world who I am and be okay with it. I aspire to be my own kind of perfect and if you’re rolling with me, then let’s roll. If not, then salute and all the best! So whilst everybody may hate Chris. I wanna be just like Chris.

If you haven’t watched it… you know what you need to do.
Love and light fam. Maurice made my Saturday!

Be who you were created to be, not who they think you should be.

~ TayBreezy

I was reminded yesterday morning, just how short life is, how, in a blink of an eye, you can take your last breath. I was reminded that there are no guarantees in life and in that we should always remain true to God, ourselves and then everyone and everything else.

This quote was inspired just by this:

It can become very easy to lose ourselves when fitting in is a thing we need to do or after a traumatic experience. We lose sight of who we really are because we allow the thoughts and feelings of others to consume us to a point where we become just like them.

Far too many times I see this and it always leaves an unsettling feeling within. I think I may have even fell victim to this at one point of my life; trying to fit in, please and gain likes.

I see people that would literally do anything, just to be validated and in many cases, by irrelevant people. Then, alas, they lose themselves to what people think they should be, act the way people say they should act and even think the way people programme them to think.

And then I ask myself Why? ‘Coz You’re beautiful as you are. You’re worthy as you are!

When you know something is wrong, you have an obligation to attempt to put it right.

If you see the world through your own eyes, you have nothing to be ashamed of.

If you like blue and all girls supposed to like pink, heck, own the damn blue lol.

Standing out by being yourself may ruffle a few feathers, it may cause people to dislike you but hey, ever heard the saying “those who matter don’t mind and those who mind don’t matter”? …

And I know It can be real hard sometimes, especially if you’re surrounded by the mediocre type who don’t know who they really are and resort to doing all sorts of things just to be validated.

But I say, always remind yourself of your purpose and your obligation to God first and if it’s all good between you and him, then you know you’re good.

Let the life you live be an example for those who follow you. No leader in history made it to the history books by being people they’re not, liked by everybody or silenced just for peace sake.

As our ever talented Kendrick would say: we got royalty, got loyalty inside our DNA!

So Sprinkle that YOUnique dust and don’t let anybody, dull that sparkle.

Love and light ya’ll

I’m not sure if I’ll meet you whilst I’m studying, but if I do, please be patient.

Coming home from work, seeing to us and supper and still having to study is going to take a toll on us. But if we work like a team, we can make it work.

Know that education is the key to my success and what’s mine will be yours. It would be even better to come home some days to supper already made #hint.

Eagerly await your arrival and I hope that I will be everything you’ve imagined and more.

Dear self

Dear self.

You are amazing. You have so much of potential and possess the power to birth and teach nations. You are a queen. You are strong, courageous and kind.

Dear self.

You were not born to be or to accept mediocre. You were born to stand out and do great things through little, consistent actions. You were not born to be fake or to pretend just to to fit in, no! you were created by the master who of masters, who created the heavens and earth and all else in between. Do you know how special you are?

Dear self

The world is not as it seems but remember that what people say about you, is none of your business. Stay in your lane and continue to see the world through your eyes 👀. Haters will always hate, use it to fuel success but never let it dull your sparkle.

Oh and self,

Always remember that you do not need permission to stand up for what’s right! If anything, you have an obligation to do so. Do not let anybody make you feel less for doing the right thing.

Whilst we have tons of growing to do, we are growing in the right direction.

Remember: it’s always between you and Allah

Love and light always
